Dave Hansendhansen@iowabizgroup.comAfter 13 years involvement in Sales, Sales Management and Special Marketing with a Fortune 50 Company, he researched the market, wrote a business plan and created a transportation company. With this went the experiences similar to most small business owners: Long days, short nights, endless situations requiring attention and cash flow problems. Through perseverance, focusing on customer service and hiring quality employees, the business grew. In a few years there was another typical small businessman’s problem: He didn’t run the business, the business ran him. After eight years of solid growth, including acquiring a troubled competitor, his company reached the point where it needed an influx of energy and cash to reach the next level. The business was sold to a National company that had no presence in this area. They had acquired several small companies in the surrounding states and Dave stayed on as a consultant for a lengthy transitional period with the responsibility of coordinating, managing and combining the new acquisitions into a profitable entity. Since most of the owners/managers remained with their businesses for a period of time, the challenge was working with business owners/managers that no longer owned the company, but certainly had a strong interest in the continued success. The ability to focus on the end objective, regardless of obstacles, recognize talents, place responsibilities with people in their strongest areas, and making tough decisions about efficiencies of locations, products and services are the same skills all business owners use, but are sometimes too close to the situation to best utilize. Having been involved with small businesses and owners from so many different angles, Dave’s insight can prove invaluable when someone decides to make a major, irreversible change in their life by selling their business. “The range of sentiments a business owner goes through before, during and after the sale are unique. The financial and emotional benefits of an objective eye and guiding hand through the process can be immeasurable. |
